What is the BUET Low-Cost Accelerometer Seismic Network (BLCASN)?
Published in Articles
Following the successful development of the BUET Low-Cost Accelerometer (BLCA), these devices have been deployed across various locations in Bangladesh. This initiative has been made possible through the support of partner institutions that generously provide infrastructure and collaboration.
As of 28 November 2025, multiple BLCA stations across the country have already recorded several regional earthquakes. The seismic network operates as a research-driven initiative, offering free registration for interested researchers. Users may apply for Gold Member Access, which, after administrative review, allows them to download waveform data recorded by the BLCA stations.
The BLCASN maintains an updated earthquake event database using the following sources:
USGS Earthquake Catalog
EMSC Earthquake Catalog
Local events recorded directly by BLCA stations
Gold members may also share their personal experiences of felt earthquakes directly on the event page. These observations help in documenting earthquake intensity based on human perception. Where applicable, reports of local structural damage may also be added.
The mission of BLCASN is to build an affordable, openly accessible seismic monitoring network for Bangladesh, bridging the gap between academic research, public awareness, and disaster preparedness.
